Caoba Platino

My son and his fiancee went to the DR about 6 months ago for a visit with her family. I asked him to bring me back to some cigars and he brought me back a three pack of Caoba Platino. I smoke the first one within a week of receiving the gift and I was unimpressed. It really needed some humidor time. So, I let the other two sit for a couple of months. Then I pulled one out and it was better, but still not very good.

So, I let the cigar sit in my humidor for a few more months and I pulled it out this afternoon. All I can say is wow! The cigar was completely different from what I had smoked twice previously.

To me, it epitomized the classic Dominican flavor profile. Mild to mild+ with plenty of roasted nuts and a touch of cocoa on top of a creamy foundation. It wasn’t a very complex cigar but it was still very satisfying.

Construction and burn were spot on in all cigars I smoked. While not as packed as an AJ or Tatuaje, the sticks were still quite solid with just a little give. Burn lines were mostly straight and corrected themselves given time.

And smoking that last one made me think that I need to explore this brand a bit more. I’m contemplating purchasing a box from them online but since I will be in the Dominican Republic in a year or so, I may just wait and by a couple to a few boxes when I’m in Santo Domingo.
