Birthday Stick? Hmmm… Whatever’s in My Dry Box

Today is my birthday. I’m 8-squared. Amazing. As I look back over the past year, it has been pretty eventful as far as cigars are concerned. I’ve had some incredible bangers, but amazingly enough, I can only recall having just a couple of duds. Lucky me!

Given that it’s my special day, the convention was to have a super-special (read: expensive) stick. And I was planning to do that and smoke my very last La Sirena Super Sea Monkeys cigar. But before I pulled it out, I wanted to check to see what I had in my dry box and saw the three sticks there. My eyes rested on the Monte Espada Oscuro and I grabbed it, then went outside and smoked it.

I know. I didn’t really follow convention. But as I smoked the Espada Oscuro, I asked myself, What really is a special cigar? That Monte could be considered that. A single sells for $27.95 at my local shop. BUT I get them online for $5.30/stick. That’s getting into budget stick territory. And I looked at the other two sticks in my dry box. To me, from a flavor profile perspective, those are special sticks in their own right.

I think for me at least, I’ve smoked some GREAT sticks over this past year and stocked up on sticks that have a $15-$25 price in shops that I got for a fraction of the price. To me, they’re all special. And to be honest, even though I smoke daily, the very ritual of smoking is a special time for me. I sit in the covered area in my backyard, turn on the heaters, light up and whether I’m working or not, for me, the time is pure bliss.

And I smoke what I’m in the mood for at the time. I’m not driven by occasion. I have a collection of great sticks, and I tee them up in my dry box. So, when I choose one, I know it’s going to fit my mood and I’m going to have a special time.
