Sometimes, a lack of complexity is NOT a bad thing. Since I’ve smoked a few of these thus far, this cigar isn’t at all complex. Its profile is fairly straight-forward. It’s woodsy, spicy, minerally with a heavy coffee component. There are occasional, fleeting notes of dark chocolate and fruitiness but other than that, there’s not too much more that the cigar offers. For a lot of cigars, that would be their death knell. But for this cigar, here’s the thing: I can’t get enough of it!
Like most LGCs I smoke, while they don’t present a plethora of flavors in their profile, I just love ’em. What they lack in complexity, they make up for in richness. And the Trinidad Espiritu No. 2 is just like that. It’s rich with deep, intense flavors contained in a thick, luxurious smoke, but balanced by a bright spiciness on the finish. The combination of the flavors and textures together make this one delicious cigar.
As AJ Fernandez was a collaborator on this and the cigar is rolled in AJ’s factory, this cigar has his signature on it, so it’s not surprising to me that I like it so much. To me, AJ makes some of the most delicious, approachable cigars in the world. And approachable is the keyword here.
I truly believe that the reason many major marcas have some AJ collabs is that they know he’ll create something approachable for them. These are typically lower-priced alternatives but so good that they generate plenty of sales. Take the H. Upmann 1844 line for instance. I discovered that line on my own and have had all of the cigars in the line. But many people I know discovered the 1844 line via the 1844 Nicaragua, which then led them to try the other sticks.
It was in this manner that I tried the Trinidad Espiritu No. 2. I saw several posts of it on Reddit and did some research. And when I saw that it was a collab between Raphael Nodal and AJ, I bought a 10-pack. With AJ’s name on it, I had a feeling that it would most probably have a flavor profile that I’d enjoy. And my hunch was correct.
This is a cigar that I thoroughly enjoy. It’s one of those cigars that I had known about for a long time and just got around to trying it, and now it’s going to be a regular buy for me!
