I’ve been a big fan of LGC for many, many years, after being attracted to the band that reminded me of the Arm & Hammer baking soda label. I knew nothing about the company way back when. I only knew that it was a DR company and that was good enough for me as I loved cigars from the DR, preferring them over their stronger Nicaraguan and Honduran counterparts.
My first experience with LGC was with the standard Wavell stick. When I took up the hobby in earnest a few years ago, that stick was a regular in my rotation. But then I discovered the Serie R and Serie R Maduro and those two have replaced the Wavell. I buy about 20-30 of either one at a time so I always have some on hand. Right now now, I’m going through the last of my Serie R Naturals, so I will be getting a bunch of the Maduro soon (I like to switch off between the two).
The thing about the regular production LGCs is that they’re akin to a well-worn, broken-in shoe. I always know what I’m getting. With the Natural, the flavor profile is straight-forward: Cedar, nuts, cacao, espresso, leather, toast, cream, malt, black and red pepper, and a touch of baking spices. That’s it.
It’s not a complex cigar. After an initial hit of cedar and black pepper, the other flavors come in through the first third, then the cigar stays put. The flavors only intensify through the smoke. There aren’t any transitions. But the combination of flavors is so pleasing and enjoyable through the entire smoke that I will invariably nub it.
