Though I’m nowhere close to smoking the variety of the professional cigar reviewers, I do smoke a lot of different cigars. And on top of that, what I smoke depends on my mood. Do I have tendencies? Sure. I tend to gravitate towards maduro cigars, but I also love a great Habano. There’s really no rhyme or reason to what I smoke.

I also don’t have a favorite. I know, I’ve mentioned that the Undercrown Maduro is my desert island cigar. But I’ve since come across some cigars in the recent past that I’d be just as happy to be stranded with on a desert island. One of those is the Super Sea Monkeys.

This cigar has totally blown me away. And it continues to blow me away every time I light one up. After an initial blast of spice and black pepper from the shaggy foot at light-up, the flavors dance around from puff to puff the entire smoke! It’s a lot like the dance of the brine shrimp “sea monkeys.” This dance of flavors includes cedar, hickory, roasted cashew nuts, apricot fruit roll-up, grape jelly, cacao bean, coffee with cream, espresso, burnt oak, citrus notes, toffee, caramel, sweet cream, buttered toast, rich milk chocolate, and créme brûlée. These dance on a floor of fruitiness, the likes of which I’ve never experienced!

And like the brine shrimp sea monkeys, the path this cigar takes is unpredictable. You just never know where it’s going to go. And to break the flavor profile into thirds would be a mistake and moreover, a disservice to this wonderful cigar. There’s simply no linearity to flavor profile. And I think this was the blender’s intent: Create a cigar whose experience mimics the dance of a sea monkey. And they’ve certainly done a great job of that!
