Ever since I had my first Definition cigar, I’ve been amazed by the incredible flavor profiles the company has on offer. The GEN413 knocked my socks off with its kaleidoscope-like, ever-changing palate; the big, bold, powerful Chairman with its almost brooding nature; the Equalizer with its rich and unctuous chocolate and coffee. And now, here’s the Defigero (day-fee-hairo), what Definition calls its most full-body blend. As Luxury describes, “This cigar was designed to smoke slowly, allowing you to savor the full-flavored notes of chocolate, espresso, oak, and brown sugar.”

The first part of that, I can attest to; this isn’t a cigar you should power through, not only to savor the blend, but because IT WILL KICK YOUR ASS! The first one I smoked, I got through it in about an hour and fifteen minutes. Mistake. It made me want to roll myself into fetal position and cry for mama! Even now, smoking my last of the three, though I’ve gone through the first inch in just over thirty minutes, I’m feeling it, so I’m going to slow down even more!

So, what’s the deal? It’s not just nicotine, of which there is ample. It’s the insanely rich and full body of the smoke from the get-go. This is not a stick I’d ever give to a newbie. They’ll throw up. If I were to share this stick, I’d only share it with someone who is experienced and regularly smokes full-bodied cigars.

That said, let’s talk about the flavors. I’ve always found that full-body cigars can be so powerful that I miss the nuance. And smoking the Defigero, it hits you so hard from the start, you can forget about how damn good it tastes! Like the Gen 413, it provides a shifting canvas of flavors, so it’s not easy to split up the cigar into thirds. But here’s I taste: Light coffee, cream, milk chocolate, burnt cedar, salted caramel, soy sauce, molasses, maple syrup, a hint of green bell pepper, a sweetness akin to salt-water taffy, cinnamon, nutmeg, cayenne (only starts appearing in the second half), herbal, cannabis-like quality (that kind of threw me for a loop the first time I tasted it – had to take another puff to make sure). Mind you, these aren’t all at once. But they will appear then be replaced with something else. It’s pretty cool.

In the three I’ve smoked thus far, something interesting happens going into the second third: the strength backs off a little (or I’ve become acclimated). BUT the quality of the smoke changes. It becomes thicker and creamier. The flavors intensify despite the strength waning a little. And I’ve learned my lesson when that happened the first. My natural – albeit unconscious – response to that was to speed up. That made me go almost catatonic!

As far as construction goes, this stick is packed! But the draw is freakin’ perfect! Just a little tighter than a Padron. The burn is slow. Be prepared to smoke this in a minimum of an hour and a half. My last one took me an hour to get through half. It’ll be at least a two-hour smoke for me this time around.

Known as "Goofydawg" for decades, a few years ago, I reinvented myself from the geeky image I used to portray to that of a patrician whose life has been refined from experience. And I realized that I'm at the time of my life where I want to share that experience and hopefully pass on some of the knowledge and wisdom I've gained over the years.
