With cigars, I tend to be a set it and forget it kind of guy. Honestly, I just don’t want to be constantly monitoring my sticks as I’ve seen so many others do. I have 236 oz. Sistema containers with Boveda packs for long term storage. I don’t use hygrometers in any of them. I just don’t see the point since the Boveda packs are two-way.
My friends handle their cigars similarly, all of us having smoked for decades. We’re all of the mind that cigars are a lot more resilient than people give them credit for. And while we all are fine with others doing their own thing, for us, there are better things to do than to fuss over our cigars.
The way I’ve seen people monitor their collection online makes me think of those folks I have encountered on sourdough bread baking forums and how they obsess over their starters. I’ve seen some people go to such extremes as bringing their starters on vacation with them. And they weren’t even baking! That’s ridiculous.
So, I chuckled to myself when I purchased a Govee this morning. But my purchase has nothing to do with obsessing over my collection. It is simply so I know what’s going on in my electric humidor. I believe it has become faulty, reading 60% rH when I think it is A LOT higher. The reason I think this is that sticks I had in there for a couple of months went completely soft!
And is that humidor is my ready box where cigars will sit up to a month I can’t have it ruining my cigars. So I am remedying the situation by using an accurate hygrometer.
I know, I could just throw in some Boveda packs and be done with it. But truth be told, I’m not sure which ones to use. Having an accurate hygrometer will tell me which pack will give me a an rH of 62%-65%.
