When I played Half Moon Bay last week, I brought my 5-pack Herf-a-dor and loaded it with a few sticks. That was the first time that I ever smoked a stogie on the golf course. After finishing the round, I thought to myself, Why hadn’t I done this until now?!

You see, even though tobacco is a stimulant, there’s something about a cigar that has a real calming effect. It really meows me out. Maybe it is the high concentration of nicotine. But whatever it is, all I know is that once I had a few pulls, my world was right as rain!

As long as I can remember smoking cigars, they’ve always made me contemplative, very much like when I have an incredible scotch or a superb wine. And when I get contemplative, my mind doesn’t drift. And actually becomes laser focused. And a laser focus is exactly what is needed for golf.

On top of that, a cigar has a calming effect. And the secret to a good golf swing is to be calm and relaxed. If you tense up there’s no telling where the ball will go.

Needless to say, a cigar or two will accompany me to every round I play.
